Give North East a pride of place

Denhang Bosai

The recent days and weeks have been indeed traumatic and chaotic for the whole Northeast, especially the young state Arunachal Pradesh which is overtly glorified as an 'island of peace.' Arunachal is also lovingly described as the land of the rising sun as the rays of the sun first kiss the lofty hills, mountains and the deep valleys of the Himalayan state. But sadly, not only development in the true sense of the term leaves a lot to be desired in Arunachal and the Northeast but the truly patriotic Arunachal people are not even allowed to live with dignity in the metropolis of the ancient and great country India. However, the state government under the able leadership of the affable Chief Minister Nabam Tuki  is leaving no stone unturned to address the burgeoning problems the state is faced with. Not only were the people of Arunachal Pradesh drowned in deep sorrow and gloom but were profoundly shocked and pained by the abominable and unbecoming act of some fellow Indians who allegedly lynched young Nido Tania to death in  the much maligned capital New Delhi. However, there is a silver-lining in the aftermath of the gruesome murder of Tania. The very conscience of the Indians has been shaken by this despicable act of the hooligans who pride themselves as mainland Indians having utter disregards for the people of the Northeast. Not only the Nothreasterners but the entire country stood up in protest against the cold blooded murder of young Nido. This was one most unfortunate incident that compelled Rahul Gandhi, Narendra Modi and all WHO's WHO of the country to cry foul over the perpetual racial discrimination against the people of the Northeast. The cries and shouts of protest and resentment not only reverberated through the streets of the country but the matter was raised in the Indian Parliament. Hopefully the Indian leaders and the policy framers of the great country have at long last realized the magnitude of the  most shameful and glaring problem of racial discrimination and hopefully justice will be done to Tania. They can no longer remain hypocrites and pretend that the racial discrimination against the Northeast people is a myth. It is a sad reality. The nation must wake up to this reality and spare no efforts to do away with it once and for all. This will do a world of good both for the Northeast and the country as a whole. But Arunachal and the Northeast must learn from the tragedies that befall on them because of the hateful attitude of some mainland Indians.

They must utilize such tragic and harrowing events for introspection. However, they need to set their own house in order first. There must be unity amongst the Northeasterners. New Delhi is a place where Arunachalees are not warmly welcomed for the reasons best known to the people there but it's the same place where Robin Hibu is proudly serving as the Inspector General of Delhi Police. Let there be more Robin Hibus in all the metros of India and see how the stereotyped attitude of the mainland people towards Arunachal and the Northeast changes. But for this to happen the young people of Arunachal and the Northeast will have to toil hard as nothing is served on a platter in this fiercely competitive world. The other Northeasterners must learn from one of their sisters Mizoram and their lone brother Sikkim. Today, Sikkim is the numero uno tourist destination and Mizoram is one of the most literate states in the country.  Even though the cries of protest in the aftermath of the most tragic death of Nido Tania have died down, the leaders of the Northeast must work ceaselessly to educate the mainland Indians on Northeast in order to arrest recurrence of such ugly incidents. They should impress upon the law makers to explore possibilities to ban the use of the derogatory term CHINKY legally all over the country. The leaders of the region must not rest till the issue of racial discrimination was addressed with a greater degree of seriousness by the central government.

Another unfortunate recent incident that compounded the problem of the people of Arunachal Pradesh was the mindless killing of ten people and injuring many more near Taraso which resulted in uncalled for economic blockade imposed by Assam thereby creating untold sufferings for the Arunachal people. It is indeed appalling that the people of Assam with whom Arunachal Pradesh has an emotional relation since incipience, resort to this frequent economic blockade at the slightest pretext. The people in Assam never try to know the reason[s] or wait for investigations to take place to find out the truth vis-à-vis such unfortunate incidents. They only seem to look for the flimsiest of excuses and reasons to harass and torment the hapless Arunachal people who are totally dependent on Assam for almost everything. The people of Assam and for that matter the people of other Indian states, especially West Bengal, Orissa, Bihar, UP, Tamil Nadu, Kerala etc must be grateful to Arunachal Pradesh for providing gainful employment to them at the cost of the Arunachal people. Do these Indian states provide employment opportunities to the Northeasterners? Assam must realize that the criminals and law breakers belong to no community, religion or region. They are simply criminals who deserve to be punished wherever they are. The innocent people must  not suffer due to the follies  and misdeeds of the mischief mongers . In fact, the people of Assam and Arunachal should help and co-ordinate with each others to nab the habitual culprits who create bad blood between the law-abiding citizens of the two neighbouring states. It will also be in the interest of both the states if Assam maintains status quo as Assam had always violated the status quo in the Assam Arunachal borders thereby disturbing the existing peace and tranquility. Assam also needs to understand that in most of the border areas like Bhalukpung, Banderdewa, Seijossa, Kimin, Likhabali, Ruksin, Nagaghat in Tirap etc there are only a few genuine Assamese. Most of the residents in the border areas are outsiders and habitual land-grabbers who create misunderstanding between Assam and Arunachal. A serious brainstorming is the need of the hour on the part of the people of Assam. Assam people must realize that whenever there is an economic blockade Assam too is hit hard because Arunachal is helping Assam economy to grow and prosper in no small measure. The time has come for the Arunachal people to realize that they cannot be dependent on Assam for every single commodity. Apparently, Arunachal cannot manufacture medicines, electronic goods, fuel and so on and so forth but the tribals there can surely grow vegetables, produce meat, fish and other commonly used items for consumption without looking towards Assam for supply. Why can't the Arunachal people inundate the markets with local products? People must work hard and do away with the shameful 'spoon feeding culture' which has rendered them lazy. Arunachal is slated to become the biggest tourism hub in the near future but are we ready for it? Can we be really good hosts? Can we project a good and clean image of ourselves? Can we endear ourselves to the mainland Indians and compel them to change their mindset and feeling about us? The Arunachal people have a work cut out and have to work really hard to give a good account of themselves.

It's such an irony that the Northeast people try to emulate anything Indian including adopting mainland Indian names whereas the same mainland Indians do not even recognize the existence of the Northeasterners. There is nothing wrong in aping the mainland Indians but the Northeasterners must travel that proverbial extra mile to jealously guard their tribal identity. Here, I may add that the Arunachal people must not strive to be just proud Indians but prove to be educated, efficient, well-informed, disciplined, honest and self-reliant Indians. The time has also come for the Northeast leaders to carry themselves well in public because they are the face of the region who represent the people in public platforms. They must not hesitate to brush up their knowledge and attend crash courses on public speaking and other personality grooming courses to improve and update their knowledge and their image in the eye of the mainland Indians who are always on the look- out for flaws in the Northeast people. They need to be well prepared and do some homework before participating in TV debates and shows so as not to sully the image of the Northeast. They must not embarrass the Northeasterners by their misconduct and poor presentation in public.  The people of the Northeast must learn to make compromises in life without necessarily demeaning and belittling their inherent ethos and their roots. Whether others like or not the Northeast people must love their culture and their roots. They must preserve their identities at any cost. It is not a crime or a curse to be born with Mongoloid features. They should feel proud of being what they are. But they must also learn to change with time and the ambiance they live in. There is nothing wrong in changing their life styles albeit momentarily in places where their ways are not taken too kindly. Many unnecessary scuffles, arguments and misunderstandings can be avoided by being little accommodative and by being broad-minded. Even Laloo Prasad Yadav dressed up in suit when he visited USA. The next day, all the newspapers were full of Laloo's picture in suit with the title 'Laloo Ban Gaya Gentleman.'  The people of Arunachal Pradesh and the Northeast must work doubly hard to project a good image of themselves in the eyes of the ever bullying mainland Indians and give the Northeast a pride of place in India. ACS  pleads for  strong mechanism for peace in boundary area

ITANAGAR, Feb 11: While referring to the recent Tarasso incident and subsequent economic blockade imposed against Arunachal Pradesh by Assam-based organizations recently, the Arunachal Civil Society (ACS) in a representation to Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi requested him to work out a strong mechanism to maintain peace along the boundary areas.

In a representation  addressed to Assam CM, the ACS said no one from Arunachal side was involved in the Taraso incident, 'but if reports are to be believed some antisocial groups provoked and spread rumours to create hatred among the residents on both sides.'

The  innocent people in Arunachal have been mentally and physically tortured by the Assam counterparts while the over two lakh people from Assam living and working in Arunachal for years have never had any cause to complain, the  ACS lamented. Problems that crop up along the boundaries can be resolved through round-table discussions and peaceful methods instead of causing enmities between the people of two neighbouring states who have been maintaining peaceful co-existence since long, the ACS added.

India, China agree to build trust, expand ties

New Delhi, Feb 11:  India and China today agreed to strengthen and expand their ties as their top officials discussed implementation of new confidence-building measures, like the Border Defence Cooperation Agreement, to build trust and understanding.

The 17th round of meeting between Special Representatives, which ended here today, saw "candid, friendly and constructive" discussions on a wide range of issues covering bilateral, regional and international issues.

The focus of the talks was on ways to maintain peace and tranquility on the border, which both sides agreed is the "cornerstone of the expanding India-China relationship".

Briefing reporters on the two-day talks, External Affairs Ministry spokesman Syed Akbaruddin said "the Special Representatives agreed that strong and expanding India-China partnership bodes well" for the two countries as well as the region.

"The Special Representatives elaborated on possible additional confidence-building measures, including the early implementation of the Border Defence Cooperation Agreement (BDCA)," he said.

The Indian side was led by National Security Adviser Shivshankar Menon while the Chinese delegation was headed by Yang Jiechi.

The BDCA, signed late last year, spells out a series of measures to enhance coordination between the armies of the two countries along the disputed 4,057km long Line of Actual Control.

The SRs, who have been engaged to address the boundary issue for over eight years, are in the second of the three-phased process. The first phase -- Political Parameters and Guiding Principles -- has already been completed and the current step of building the framework for a settlement is considered the most difficult part.

The third and final step will be demarcation and delineation of the boundary.

Asked how long it will take to reach the settlement, the MEA spokesman refused to hazard a guess, arguing the issue is "complex". However, he added both sides are seriously working to reach a settlement. PTI

NEW DELHI, Feb 11: A delegation of leaders from Arunachal Pradesh headed by Takam Sanjoy, MP, Lok Sabha along with T N Norbu, Principal Advisor to CM & Parliamentary Secretary, PWD and Jambey Tashi, Parliamentary Secretary, Civil Aviation called on A K Antony, Union Defence Minister in connection with BRO's decision to retrench all the casual laourers  working under Project Vartak in Tawang and West Kameng districts.

About 7000 casual labourers have been retrenched in the wake of finance ministry's decision to cut the budget down to 20 percent. Sanjoy and the team also submitted a letter at Defence Minister's south block office and urged upon him to immediately give directive for quashing of mass discharge order of the Vartak authority. The delegation also informed that 80 percent of the workers under the Vartak are from the local indigenous populace of the two districts. "These local workers who are the only force countering snowy peaks and difficult terrain and further demanded that instead of providing difficult and winter allowances, they're arbitrarily being discharged which is against the labour law," Sanjoy pleaded.

The delegation was assured by the defence minister that every step would be taken to quash if any such order issued by the authority of Vartak. The defence minister also informed that the MoS Defence Jitendra Singh would be laying the foundation stone of NIMAS at Dirang, West Kameng district soon.

ITANAGAR, Feb 11: North East Students' Organization (NESO) during its meeting with All Arunachal Pradesh Students' Union (AAPSU) and All Assam Students' Union (AASU) in Guwahati yesterday demanded both Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and central governments to evolve mechanism to protect the life and properties of people residing in border areas.

Holding both Assam and Arunachal Pradesh governments responsible for the recent Taraso incident, in which 10 people were killed and three are still reportedly missing, the NESO, AAPSU and AASU opined that the incident would not have happened had both the state governments taken timely action and not ignored the serious issue, according to an AAPSU release.

NESO demanded both the State governments as well as the Central government to find all the three missing Assamese people believed to have been killed during Tarasso firing. While demanding CBI intervention into the case the meeting further demanded to apprehend the culprits involved in the incident immediately. They further resolved to organize an agitational programme at Guwahati on February 14, in front of Raj Bhawan from 11 am to 2 pm. The member units of NESO, namely AASU, AAPSU, All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU), Khasi Students' Union (KSU), Garo Students' Union (GSU), Nagaland Students' Federation (NSF), Mizo Zirlai Paul (MZP), Twipra Students Federation (TSF) will submit memorandum to the President and Prime Minister of India through their respective state Governors on the same day. He opined that enforcing economic blockade is not a healthy tactics to find solution to the problem. Any problem or difference can be sorted out through combined efforts, he said.

The AAPSU president also appealed to the media houses of both the states to work without any biasness for the larger interest of the people.

While blaming the Assam govt. for failing to protect the life and properties of Assamese people, the AASU president criticized the govt. of Arunachal Pradesh for 'doing nothing' against the culprits, who brutally killed 11 people and injured many.

Respect cannot be forced, it should be earned

Dear Editor,

Through your esteemed daily I would like to bring into the light that Lt. Nido Tania one of the bright students of Arunachal brutally murdered by shopkeeper at Lajpat Nagar, Delhi happened due to racial discrimination. His case should be treated as special case, and the culprits should be booked and punished as per the law. Political parties and organizations across the North-East are protesting for the Tania’s death and staging dharnas for the justice. However, in this regards, many organizations while condemning the incident says that the “Assam and other state has no respects for Arunachal and its people”, such statements are really disappointing and hurts other brother and sisters who are residing in Arunachal and its nearby areas, as bad and good people are found in all communities but it does not mean that all outsiders have the same kind of thinking like the few. I am also staying outside the state but I sometimes find very good people around me and sometimes bad. In my opinion, the word ‘respect’ is to be earned by oneself not by force. We cannot force the other people to respect us rather we have to earn it through our good deeds. Similarly, when we call the outsider ‘haring or nipak’ in our state, they might feel bad but do not react to it, may be to avoid any kind of confrontations. In the same way, if we have been called chinky’s outside the state we feel bad and get hurts. Therefore, my earnest request to the people is to think over the topic and earn respects from others for good behaviors and thoughts. Racial discrimination against any human being is a crime and we should avoid it at the earliest for the welfare of all.

This is right time to wake up and come forward to help each other for the justice of our beloved brother Nido Tania.

Yours,

Heri Sam

Bangalore.

Justice be delivered to late Tania

The truth finally seems to be emerging in Nido Tania murder case. Delhi police yesterday told high court that Tania died of severe internal head and lung injuries. The post mortem report said that there were nine external injuries on the body of the deceased and he died of severe head and lung injuries. This report should end debate over cause of death. Initially, the accused had tried to mislead the investigation by claiming that Tania died of something else and not due to their assault.

Further Delhi Police today told court that they have slapped the charge of murder against the four persons, one of whom was arrested this morning, in connection with the death of a 19-year-old Tania. They have been booked under section 302 (murder) of IPC after the postmortem report revealed that late Tania died due to injuries to his head and face caused by a blunt object. The following steps by Delhi police is laudable and have given ray of hope to the victim’s family. The police should filed strong charge sheet and make it water tight case, so as to ensure that justice is delivered to late Tania.
